He has experience with successful social media campaigns and fundraising for conservation, and runs @birds_hawaii_pastpresent on the major social media platforms. Bret has an undergraduate degree in wildlife ecology and management from Utah State University and a masters’ degree in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, studying ʻAkiapōlāʻau. Bret was born and raised in Utah, but during his time in the Hoʻomākaʻikaʻi explorations program became inspired to work with native birds. He has family ties to East Maui from the ʻAhupuaʻa of Nuʻu, on Oʻahu from Hauʻula, and from Kīlauea, Kauaʻi. Bret currently calls Waimea on Hawaiʻi Island home, where you can find him cleaning yard or reading a good fantasy novel.
